Bill-C45 to enact a revised Fisheries Act was tabled in the House of Commons on December 13th, 2006 and these presentations were based on this new legislation.
The discussion that followed focused on concerns (expressed by SEHAB constituents) focused on the ability of this proposed new legislation to direct and empower DFO as a legislated and funded federal agency to appropriately maintain and sustain our freshwater and ocean habitats and the organisms that inhabit them.
There was further discussion concerning opportunities for broad consultation to allow for meaningful informed, input beyond that which the government has already undertaken. There is a perceived need for multi-interest Canadians to provide input.
See action items: re Fisheries Act.
- Provincial Steelhead Situation
Some members and their constituents are very concerned about the lack of consultation for changing steelhead watershed classification. The recent classification to wild from enhanced on the Nimpkish is an example. Groups around the province have contacted SEHAB regarding the provincial ministry’s actions and policies regarding consultation, appeals, fees and relationships. SEHAB to write a letter to Honourable Barry Penner, Minister of Environment conveying concerns and requesting provincial representation at SEHAB to improve communication and relationship.
See action item: re steelhead
- Fisheries National Policies: Consultations, Development and Implementation
SEHAB relationship with the DFO, Pacific Region and our constituents has seen considerable successes. However, SEHAB does not have a process to offer information and advice to Fisheries on a national level. Many of the issues and challenges facing the Pacific Region flow from national policies and allocations. Discussion followed on the need and will for SEHAB to pursue development of a method to act as an advisory body to the Minster of Fisheries.
